Moraine Lake, nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, is one of the most breathtaking destinations in Banff National Park. However, getting there requires some planning due to the closure of Moraine Lake Road to personal vehicles year-round. Here’s how you can make the most out of your visit to this stunning lake.
Getting to Moraine Lake
Parks Canada Shuttles and Roam Public Transit: Shuttles run frequently from the Lake Louise Park and Ride and ensure you have a hassle-free journey. (I know the tickets could be sold out quick 😢)
Hiking or Biking: For the more adventurous, hiking or biking from Lake Louise is an option. It’s about 14 kilometers one way, so be prepared for a moderate to strenuous effort.
Private Commercial Vehicles: Several tour companies offer transport to Moraine Lake.
So, what is the best way to experience Moraine Lake
1️⃣ The Classic and Easiest Way: Moraine Lake Shoreline Trail
This gentle trail is perfect for all ages and fitness levels. It offers stunning views of the turquoise waters and the surrounding peaks. The trail is about 3 kilometers round trip and takes roughly an hour to complete. It’s a great introduction to the beauty of Moraine Lake.
Highlights:
Scenic viewpoints along the trail

Wheelchair accessible in parts
2️⃣ For the Adventurous: Tower of Babel
The Tower of Babel is a challenging scramble that rewards you with panoramic views of the Valley of the Ten Peaks and Moraine Lake from above. This trail is not for beginners, as it involves significant elevation gain and some technical climbing skills.
Highlights:
Spectacular aerial views of Moraine Lake
A thrilling experience for seasoned hikers and climbers
⭐⭐⭐We will try to do it this summer. Will wait until all snow melted.
3️⃣ Sentinel Pass via Larch Valley Trail--My Favorite Hike:
This hike is renowned for its stunning scenery, especially in the fall when the larches turn golden. The trail begins at Moraine Lake and ascends through Larch Valley, offering breathtaking views of the Ten Peaks, before reaching Sentinel Pass.
Highlights:
Diverse landscapes from lush forests to alpine meadows
Spectacular views from Sentinel Pass
Wildlife spotting opportunities
Tips:
Be prepared for a strenuous hike (11.6 km round trip with significant elevation gain)
Check trail conditions before you go, especially in early summer and late fall
