If you’re looking for a hike that combines stunning views, a pet-friendly atmosphere, and a manageable challenge, Chester Lake in Kananaskis Country should be at the top of your list—especially during the Larch season.
Chester Lake is a trail that I’d personally rate as easy, making it accessible for hikers of all levels. With a gentle elevation gain of just 400 meters and a round-trip distance of approximately 9 kilometers, this hike offers a rewarding experience without being overly strenuous. The trail is well-marked and maintained, ensuring a smooth journey whether you're a seasoned hiker or just starting out.

While Chester Lake is a fantastic hike any time of year, it truly shines during the Larch season. In late September to early October, the subalpine larch trees turn a brilliant golden color, creating a breathtaking contrast against the evergreen forests and the clear blue sky. This is the perfect time to bring your camera, as there are countless spots along the trail that offer incredible photo opportunities.

From the moment you start your ascent, you’ll be greeted by the sight of these golden larches dotting the landscape. The trail opens up to expansive views of the surrounding mountains, with the vibrant larches in the foreground. Once you reach the lake, you’ll find yourself surrounded by these golden beauties, making it a perfect spot to take a break, have a snack, and snap some photos.

For those who love to hike with their furry friends, Chester Lake is a great choice. The trail is pet-friendly, so you can bring your dog along for the adventure. Just remember to keep them on a leash, as this is a popular trail and you’ll likely encounter other hikers and their pets along the way.
