  • When to Visit

The gondola operates from late June to mid-September each year (check the website for exact dates). Here's what to expect during different times:

Late June to Early July: Expect lingering snow in the alpine and early blooms of yellow and white alpine flowers. This period also has fewer bugs.

Late July to Mid-August: The meadows reach their colorful peak with thousands of red, yellow, and purple wildflowers. However, this is also the peak season for horseflies and mosquitos.

Late September: The gondola closes before the golden larch season begins. If you want to see the golden forests, you'll need to hike the access road.

Regardless of when you visit, bring bug spray, and consider a mosquito head net. Also, pack warm and rain-proof layers as the weather can be unpredictable at these elevations. This is grizzly bear country, so carry bear spray and know how to use it.

The Perfect Day in Sunshine Meadows-Our choice

  • Start with the Gondola and Chairlift

Begin your day by taking the gondola, then immediately hop on the Standish Express Chairlift (included with your gondola ticket) to the Standish Viewing Deck. This offers the most stunning view in the area, where you'll gaze down upon Rock Isle, Grizzly, and Larix Lake. You can see Mount Assiniboine on a clear day.

  • Explore the Scenic Loop

From the Standish Viewing Deck, descend towards Rock Isle Lake and embark on a loop of Larix and Grizzly Lake. Along the way, you'll find numerous picturesque viewpoints of Rock Isle Lake. On the Grizzly/Larix Lake Loop, you'll wander through subalpine larch forests, with summer wildflowers adorning the forest floor.

  • Additional Tips

Photography: Sunshine Meadows is a dream location for photographers, especially during the wildflower bloom. Bring a good camera and plenty of memory cards.

Hiking: Wear sturdy hiking boots and bring trekking poles for stability, especially if you plan to explore off the main paths.

Safety: Always let someone know your plans and estimated return time. The weather can change rapidly, so check the forecast and be prepared for all conditions.

Respect Wildlife: Keep a safe distance from all wildlife and never feed animals. Use a telephoto lens for close-up shots.

Sunshine Meadows is a spectacular destination offering a serene alternative to the bustling Banff townsite. Whether you're there for a day hike, a photoshoot, or simply to enjoy the natural beauty, it promises an unforgettable experience.
