Devil's Thumb via Lake Agnes Trail

Choosing a hike for just one day in Lake Louise can be tough since all the routes offer amazing views. My advice is to choose a hike that feels safe and enjoyable for you. If the hike is too challenging for you or your group, it's not worth it! ☺️

It's easy to find many blogs or pieces of information about this trail, but I want to share my own experience. This is very personal to me, and I hope my sharing will provide you with some ideas before you decide to go.

I found the last part difficult because the trail is not marked with signs. You'll need to follow the Big Beehive Trail to its end, then look for a footpath pointing towards the thumb-shaped peak. Since this is a popular hike, be careful in the final section and watch out for rocks above. We didn't wear helmets, but Kary wore gloves 🧤 for protection.

The final ascent up Devil’s Thumb is steep, with loose rocks and soil making it slippery. There are two possible routes: go straight up the middle of the gully or keep left closer to the trees. Kary chose the tree route and took a bit longer than me, who went straight up the middle. Near the top, the terrain changes to rock. There's no climbing involved, but the main trail becomes less clear. You’ll see several paths; choose the one you’re most comfortable with and keep going up. Once you reach the top, walk straight to the end of Devil’s Thumb where the viewpoint is. From 2,459 meters, you can see the Big Beehive nestled between Lake Agnes and Lake Louise, with the Little Beehive in the background. It’s a marvelous view and a perfect reward for the challenging hike.👏🏻

Enjoy your snack time! We spent an hour having lunch and taking photos at the top. Total 6 hours that day. It's definitely a challenging hike, but the view is worth it.💑

Please check the AllTrails app and download the offline map before your hike.
